Gemcitabine HCI (Gemzar) is a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat certain types of cancer (non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and pancreatic cancer). Chemotherapy drugs act to control the growth of rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells. The goal of chemotherapy is to kill as many cancer cells as possible or to stop them from dividing and making more cancer cells. Gemcitabine works by interfering with the process by which cells divide and repair themselves, thus preventing the further growth of cancer cells and leading to cell death.
