Generic Toprol-XL

Announced July 26, 2007, KV Pharmaceutical announced that it has begun shipment of its 100 mg and 200 mg strengths of metoprolol succinate extended release tablets. KV anticipates being accorded the benefit of a 180-day generic exclusivity period for the marketing of these two dosage strengths. The company also announced that the courts have judged in the company's favor in its patent litigation with AstraZeneca. The decision clears the way for the company to market its metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets without interference from the AstraZeneca patents.



On August 2, 2007, Sandoz introduced metoprolol succinate 50 mg extended release tablets, a generic equivalent of Toprol XL, in the U.S. today. According to IMS Health data, the 50 mg tablet of Toprol XL, with sales of $643 million in the U.S. for the 12 months ending April 2007, is the most widely dispensed strength of the drug.
