On August 15, 2007, Omaha Steaks celebrates its 90th birthday. Beginning in 1917 as a small custom butcher shop, the company has grown into the nation's largest direct-to-consumer marketer of premium beef and gourmet foods.
Omaha Steaks continues to be privately-owned by the founding family, the Simon's of Omaha, Nebraska.
Originally known as The Table Supply Meat Company, the family business sold premium quality beef to restaurants, hotels and grocers in the Omaha area. In the 1940's, Union Pacific Rail Road became a customer and purchased the company's steaks exclusively to be served in the dining cars of their luxury passenger trains. This national exposure and the subsequent customer requests for Omaha Steaks prompted the company to initiate its first mail order venture in 1952 with ads in The New Yorker and various flyers and mailings.
Innovations including direct parcel shipping, polystyrene shipping coolers, and vacuum packaging helped to fast forward the company's growth. Today, Omaha Steaks are delivered daily to the doorsteps of millions of customers nationwide.
In addition to the company's signature steaks and red meats, the product line has been expanded to include a complete line of pork, poultry, seafood, side dishes, appetizers and desserts
