Three frisky, 12-week-old Amur tiger cubs, the newest and smallest of the big cats, are on public exhibition at the Philadelphia Zoo under the watchful eye of Kira, their mother. They are named Koosaka, Changbai, and Terney. The tiger cubs, born May 24, 2007, made their public debut before TV news cameras and admiring and excited Zoo visitors on August 16, 2007.

The Zoo's keepers are among the most experienced in the U.S. in tiger breeding and births, having experienced Kira's two previous litters here, and over several years they have developed a trusting relationship with her.

By 1930, the Amur tiger, commonly referred to as the Siberian tiger, was on the verge of extinction, with perhaps only about fifty living in the wild. Today, due largely to conservation efforts, there are an estimated four hundred Amur tigers in the wild, although the cats are still under severe threat from poaching, habitat loss, and declining prey populations.
