Ventas is a healthcare real estate investment trust. Its diverse portfolio of properties located in forty-three states and two Canadian provinces includes seniors housing communities, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals and medical office and other properties.

An example of what Ventas does: in June 2007, the University of Kentucky approved a transaction involving the leasing and operation of Good Samaritan Hospital owned by Ventas in Lexington, Kentucky at its current annual cash rent of approximately $2.3 million, plus annual escalations. As part of the transaction, the university has the right to purchase the hospital from the company, and the company has the right to sell the hospital to the university, for a purchase price of $35 million. Ventas acquired the hospital in 2005 for $21 million.
